Description
Potash, commonly referred to as Kaun in some regions, is a naturally occurring mineral salt primarily composed of potassium carbonate (K₂CO₃) or potassium hydroxide (KOH). It is widely used in agriculture, food processing, traditional medicine, and industrial applications due to its alkaline properties and potassium content.
Potash (Kaun) is traditionally obtained from wood ash leaching or mined from natural deposits. It plays a crucial role in soil fertilization, helping to improve crop yield by supplying essential potassium nutrients. In food processing, it serves as a leavening agent, pH regulator, and softening agent for dishes like Nigerian “ewedu” soup and other traditional meals.
Additionally, Kaun is used in soap making, glass production, and textile processing due to its ability to act as a flux and softening agent. Its medicinal applications include use as an antacid and electrolyte replenisher in some traditional remedies.
